Polls reopen in Italy's general elections

Conservative leader Silvio Berlusconi is expected to win a third premiership by defeating new centre-left flagbearer Walter Veltroni.

Polls reopened on Monday in Italy's general elections with conservative leader Silvio Berlusconi expected to win a third premiership by defeating new centre-left flagbearer Walter Veltroni.

Polling stations opened at 7:00 am (0500 GMT), with voting to continue until 3:00 pm (1300 GMT) on the second and final day of polling.

The first day on Sunday saw turnout down by four percent from two years ago, when Berlusconi's nemesis, centre-left leader Romano Prodi, defeated him by a handful of votes.
