Two of the three factions of the pro-monarchist Rashtriya Prajatantra Party in Nepal have decided to get united and rename their party as the National Shakti Prajatantra Party.
The decision to merge the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and Rashtriya Janashakti Party (RJP) was announced at a joint press conference here on Saturday.
Shaking hands after formally agreeing to unite, RPP chief *Pashupati Shamsher JB Rana *and RJP chief Surya Bahadur Thapa informed that both leaders would take turns to hold the chairman’s post of the new outfit.
A committee has been formed under senior leader Bishwambandhu Thapa to oversee the merger process. It has also been entrusted with the responsibility of holding a general convention within a year to elect a new chairman.
Formed in 1990 after re-establishment of democracy by the late King Birendra, the RPP had split into two factions in 1997, but reunited a year later.
The party suffered another split in 2005 and another when senior leader Kamal Thapa broke away to form RPP (Nepal). At present all the three factions have just 15 members in the 601-member Constituent Assembly.
Senior RPP leader Lokendra Bahadur Chand had informed HT earlier this week that the Kamal Thapa faction, which is still seeking restoration of constitutional monarchy in the Himalayan nation, would also join the two factions soon.
