Russian President Vladimir Putin put forward a proposal to break the deadlock over Iran's nuclear programme during his landmark visit to the Islamic republic, Iranian officials said on Thursday.
The announcement came as Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani revealed he would hold a new round of talks with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana to find a solution to the atomic standoff on Wednesday in Rome.
No further details were given on the Putin proposal, made during his talks yesterday with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who reiterated that Iran had no intention of abandoning controversial uranium enrichment activities.
Only hours after Putin left Iran, its arch foe Israel announced that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert would visit Russia tomorrow for what one official described as a a "last-minute, urgent meeting".
"The two intend to discuss a series of regional issues, including the peace process with the Palestinians, Iran's threat and attempt to acquire nuclear weapons, and developments in the region," Olmert's office said.
Israel is one of the leading campaigners against Iran's nuclear ambitions along with its chief ally the United States, but is widely regarded as the Middle East region's sole if undeclared nuclear armed state.
