The earthquake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, erupted in the Ngari prefecture in the western part of China-controlled Tibet at 7:54 pm (1154 GMT), the Xinhua news agency said.

No casualties were immediately reported, according to Xinhua, which added that the population in the area near the epicentre is somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000.

On January 9, the same region experienced a 6.9-magnitude quake, the strongest tremor in a decade, but with no loss of life or property damage reported.
