According to police, the Indian was walking with two friends in the west end of Princess Street on early hours of Sunday when a man approached and made racist comments.

He then punched the victim, knocking him to the ground, before running off along Princess Street.

The victim was treated for facial injuries at the city's Royal Infirmary, police said, adding they are treating the incident as a "hate crime".

The suspect is described as being white, with short dark hair, about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a muscular build. He was wearing a dark-coloured jacket, dark trousers and white trainers.

Detective sergeant Mark McCulloch said: "This has been an entirely unprovoked assault which has left a young man requiring hospital treatment. We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time, and who might recognise the description of the suspect, to contact us on 101.
