Rajapaksa authorises Fonseka sentence

President Mahinda Rajapakse today authorised a military court to strip former army chief Sarath Fonseka of his rank and medals.

President Mahinda Rajapakse on Saturday authorised a military court to strip former army chief Sarath Fonseka of his rank and medals.

The first court martial on Friday found Fonseka guilty of engaging in politics while in active service and was sentenced to a dishonorable discharge from rank pending Rajapaksa's approval. He ordered that Fonseka be cashiered from the Sri Lanka Army as recommended by the tribunal that probed his involvement in politics on three separate charges.
