Nobel Prize-winning Russian writer and dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn was laid to rest in Moscow on Wednesday, as his family and President Dmitry Medvedev looked on, live television images showed.

Solzhenitsyn, who spent eight years in the Gulag prison camps and helped shake the foundations of Soviet power with his writings, died at his home in Moscow on Sunday at the age of 89.
