Unconfirmed reports during the day said the 49-year-old, who suffered a fractured skull and cuts all over the body when five prisoners attacked him in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail on April 26, was clinically dead.

"He continues to be serious but has not been declared brain dead," Mahmood Shaukat, the head of the board supervising Singh's treatment, told PTI.

"My brother's condition is not good. He is very critical. I'm convinced that Pakistani authorities are hiding things," Singh's sister Dalbir Kaur told HT over the phone from Lahore.

The doctors at Jinnah Hospital were not telling them anything, Kaur said when asked about reports that Singh was brain dead.

She again demanded that Indian doctors be flown in to treat Singh.

"Poonam is not well. Her health deteriorated after seeing her father’s condition... so we have decided to come back," Kaur said.
