Security has been beefed up in emergency-ruled Bangladesh to prevent terrorists and outlawed militants groups' from creating disturbances during December 29 general elections in the country.
"Carryout non-stop drive so the terrorists and identified miscreants cannot create chaos as the election aspirants will start massive campaigns soon," Chief adviser of the interim government Fakhruddin Ahmed told government officials in northwestern Rangpur, last evening.
"The people of the country eagerly await the polls and certainly we will have to succeed in the test offering a peaceful and credible election."
His comments came as Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in the past several days issued letters to a number of politicians and law enforcement agencies including the elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and government offices reaffirming their pledges to uproot man-made or "devil's law" particularly in the northwestern region.
An influential leader of former premier Sheikh Hasina's Awami League, Motia Chowdhury, earlier this week received a CD containing JMB preaching while RAB got a letter warning of retaliation if actions were taken against the outfit.
"We suspect some quarters could use some extreme right-wing groups or their names with certain vested interests ahead of the elections," RAB's additional director general Colonel Gulzar Ahmed told PTI.
He also referred to sudden upraise of Islamic zealots under banners styled Khatme Nabuat Andolon and Ulama Anjuman-e Al-Bayinat who in recent weeks waged a anti-sculpture campaign calling statues "un-Islamic".
