Gagah Prakoso said that the long speedboat, which had 40 passengers on board, capsized yesterday when it was pounded by strong waves, causing the engine to stop off Central Kalimantan province.

Rescuers were still searching for the missing person, he said, while 31 other passengers were rescued without injuries.

The boat was sailing between Sampit and Pagatan towns, a distance of 40 miles, he added.

The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands has a poor safety record, and fatal accidents are common.

Up to 335 people were killed when a heavily overloaded ferry sank off Sulawesi island in January last year.
