It said the new deaths late Wednesday brought the death toll of the protests, which began on Monday, to four , while nine others were wounded, including two policemen and a woman, according to a statement carried by SPA state news agency.

The ministry claimed that “these casualties were sustained during exchange of fire with unknown criminals who... fired from residential areas.”

Meanwhile, Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s agreement to step down failed to halt anti-government demonstrations or prevent violence on Thursday as regime supporters killed five protesters demanding that the ousted leader be put on trial for crimes against the nation.
