Observing that the Afghan situation is "dangerous" at present, the White House has said the Obama Administration is working to make sure that the condition does not deteriorate further and would ensure safety of the American people there.
"He (Obama) said during the campaign, that we ought to move additional troops to Afghanistan as we have a very dangerous situation there. Terrorists that had planned horrific acts here in 2001 are likely planning again," said the White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs on Monday during his daily press briefing.
Gibbs said: "We're going to ensure the safety of the American people and make sure that Afghanistan doesn't deteriorate any further."
Referring to the review process started by the new Administration, he said, "The President has started a process, with Secretary Gates, with the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, with military commanders in the individual countries of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the wider region, to evaluate our posture as it relates to Afghanistan."
Last week, Obama had called Afghanistan and Pakistan as the central front in the US war against terrorism. He also announced appointment of Richard Holbrooke as the Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan.

{{/usCountry}}Referring to the campaign rhetoric, he said "In the campaign, the President talked about the fact that we'd largely taken our eyes off the ball in Afghanistan and moved direct resources to Iran, I'm sorry to Iraq to fight there."
"We've seen in that intervening time a significant deterioration in the situation in Afghan and along the border. I think the President has said many of the people are the same people that had planned the terror attacks in this country and are likely to be alive and are planning more."
