Sergeant Policarpio dela Cruz attacked his companions as they were disembarking from a vehicle at an army camp in the southern town of Barira on Friday, the military said.
He was subdued and was himself wounded. Five people, including two officers, were wounded, while two others were killed, the military said.
Regional army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Ponce said a "thorough investigation of the incident" was being carried out.
"Initial investigations disclosed that Sergeant dela Cruz was observed to be mentally imbalanced," Ponce said.
