Strong wind and rain killed 12 people and injured nine others as a tropical storm sliced through the mountainous northern Philippines, blowing roofs off houses and toppling power poles, officials said on Monday.
Rescuers pulled a villager alive from a hut buried by a landslide, but he died on the way to a hospital in Itogon township in Benguet province, officials said.
In nearby Pangasinan province, where Tropical Storm Halong made landfall on Saturday with winds of 65 mph (105 kilometers per hour), four people including a 15-year-old died when they were hit by iron sheets blown off houses, the National Disaster Coordination Council said in a statement.
A total of 12 people were killed and nine injured as Halong made its way out of the Philippines' main northern island of Luzon, the disaster agency said in a statement.
Forecasters said the storm was expected to pass south of Tokyo on Tuesday.
About 3,000 houses were destroyed, trees were uprooted and electrical posts were knocked down, causing power outages and cutting off phone lines in several northern provinces, officials said.
