Strong quake rattles South Sandwich Islands: USGS

A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck early today near the South Sandwich Islands, a remote British territory near Antarctica and South America's southern tip, the US Geological Survey said.

A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck early Sunday near the South Sandwich Islands, a remote British territory near Antarctica and South America's southern tip, the US Geological Survey said.

No immediate tsunami warning was issued.

The quake, which hit at 7:54am local time (0954 GMT) was at a depth of 121 kilometers (75 miles), the USGS said in a statement.

The epicenter was about 104 kilometers northwest of remote Visokoi Island, part of the South Sandwich Island chain, and some 1,984 km east of the Falkland Islands, the USGS reported.
