Strong quake registered in South Atlantic

The magnitude 7.3 quake took place 10 kilometres under water, deep enough to trigger a tsunami.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 was registered off the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean early morning on Monday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake, which took place 10 kilometres under the water, was registered some 345 kilometres southeast of Bristol Island in the South Sandwich Islands, a UK territory east of Argentina.

Underwater quakes at low depths are known to cause tsunamis.
