"A suicide bombing aimed at a US army patrol in Al-Dawasa district resulted in 34 wounded," a local police official said.

There were no immediate reports of Iraqi or US military casualties in the powerful blast which struck a busy downtown city street full of shops.

Samu Salim, a doctor at Medical City hospital in Mosul, said he had received 34 wounded, including some victims in critical condition. "Some have gone into emergency surgery," he said.

Despite repeated Iraqi-US operations in Mosul, Iraq's second largest city is still gripped by a strong insurgency, in part due to a complex Kurd, Sunni and Christian mix.

The US military considers Mosul the last urban bastion of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, a franchise of Osama bin Laden's global terror network that has killed thousands of people in Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion.
