MIT police, along with agents from the FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearm and Explosives investigated the materials found in a common area of an MIT dormitory.

The material was noticed early morning by a private contractor doing construction work in the building.

The building was evacuated and the Cambridge Police Bomb Unit "disrupted" the suspicious material thrice by water cannon.

During the time of the investigation, much of the area surrounding the dormitory was cordoned off and the buildings evacuated.

Responders evaluated the materials, which had the appearance and characteristics of a pipe bomb.

The material was found to be harmless and the area was later declared safe, MIT said.
