Aung San Suu Kyi had an "emotional" telephone conversation with her youngest son soon after being freed from years of house arrest, the British embassy in Bangkok said on Sunday.
"We understand from a family source that Kim (Aris) did speak to his mother on Saturday evening. He found it very emotional," said an embassy official in the Thai capital, where the democracy icon's son was seeking a Myanmar visa.
Suu Kyi walked free on Saturday after seven straight years confined to her Yangon home with no telephone or Internet access and only limited contact with the outside world.
Kim Aris, who has not seen his mother in years, lives in Britain but travelled to Bangkok in anticipation of her release.
The 33-year-old "still hasn't received his visa" to enter Myanmar, said the embassy official, who declined to be named. "He is looking forward to getting that so he can go over and meet his mum."
Suu Kyi's decades-long struggle for her country has come at a high personal cost: her husband, a British academic, died in 1999, and in the final stages of his battle with cancer the junta refused him a visa to see his wife.
