The armed insurgents attacked the post in the northwestern province of Badghis on Monday, deputy provincial governor Abdul Ghani Sabir told AFP.

"Three policemen were killed in the attack and Taliban took eight other policemen hostage," he said.

Sabir had no information on any casualties among the attackers.

Provincial police chief Mohammad Ayob Niazyar said reinforcements had been scrambled to the remote area, where Taliban attacks are rarely reported.

The extremist Taliban was removed from power by a US-led invasion in 2001. Its insurgency against the new US-backed administration is most active in the south and east of the country, in areas bordering Pakistan.
