A South African commuter plane crashed into the grounds of a school on Thursday, injuring its three crew, after declaring an emergency shortly after taking off from Durban airport.

The Jetstream 41 turboprop broke into three pieces when it crashed into playing fields at a school situated about 400 metres (yards) from the airport runway, the regional airline Airlink said.

"Crew reported engine loss and smoke from the rear of the aircraft," it said.
The school was closed due to a public holiday.
The airline said it had no details on the crew's injuries.
