A top court in Bangladesh on Sunday granted anticipatory bail to a senior Islamaist leader, who has been under the scanner for his role in the bloody mutiny by the paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR)last month.
High Court judge Shahidul Haque granted Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdur Razzak bail till April 5 and asked the authorities not to "arrest or harass" him in connection with the BDR rebellion, in which 75 people, including 58 unarmed army officers, were massacred.
Razzak had been issued notice by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), asking him to appear at their office tomorrow for questioning in regard to the bloody rebellion.
Abdul Kahar Akand, Principal investigator of the case, yesterday issued the notice asking Razzaq to appear for questioning in connection with the Pilkhana killing case.
Razzak filed two separate petitions seeking bail in the case and challenged legality of the CID notice.
Razzak told the court he feared that he might be harassed in connection with the case. The court, however, rejected his petition for suspensions of the CID summon.
Earlier, the government had indicated that the role of militant Islamist organisations in the BDR mutiny could not be ruled out. It said that investigators were closely looking at the possible role of the the extremist outfits in the rebellion.
