The local Cumbria Ambulance Service said that 180 people were on board the train that derailed on Saturday. And while there were no reports of fatalities, some passengers were still trapped inside one of the nine carriages, which have all derailed.

A spokeswoman said, "We have reports of various injuries, from leg injuries to back injuries and head injuries -- ranging from minor to quite serious."

The ambulance service said one carriage was still half on the tracks. Emergency workers were struggling to reach those trapped because live power lines above the track had come down.

The spokeswoman said they were alerted at 8:16 pm (0146 IST).

Police, ambulance and fire and rescue services were at the difficult-to-access rural site, working in darkness, mud and wet weather.

Royal Air Force Sea King helicopters have been scrambled to the area, as have mountain rescue teams based in the nearby Lake District national park. Local hospitals were on standby to receive casualties.

Witnesses described the "terrifying" moment the train came off the track.
