The clash erupted when insurgents fired at soldiers manning the northern defence line in Vavuniya district on Friday, said military spokesman Brig Prasad Samarasinghe.

"Troops confirm that four Tamil Tigers were killed in the retaliatory fire," he said, adding that no soldiers were killed. There was no immediate comment from the rebels.
