Tsvangirai says farming, industry and mining are at a near standstill and that an estimated 5.5 million people will require food aid in the coming months.

The formation of a unity government between Tsvangirai and rival President Robert Mugabe has stalled over the allocation of ministerial posts.

Tsvangirai told reporters on Saturday that it was "imperative" a government be formed "to ensure our people have food and do not die of starvation."

Mugabe is attending the annual gathering of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
