A gunman opened fire in the lobby of a California hospital killing one person and wounding another, before turning the gun on himself, police have said.

The incident happened on Thursday at the Long Beach Memorial Medical Centre about 40 km south of Los Angeles.

Local television channel KCAL9 said the gunman had recently received his dismissal notice from the hospital where he worked.
