Uganda riots death toll rises to 21: police

The death toll from riots in Ugandan capital has risen to 21 people, officials have said. Police spokeswoman Judith Nabakoba said seven people have died in hospitals since Saturday.

The death toll from riots in Ugandan capital has risen to 21 people, officials have said.

Police spokeswoman Judith Nabakoba said seven people have died in hospitals since Saturday. At least 14 others are known to have been killed in the clashes that began on Thursday. The situation calmed over the weekend.

Among the victims is a 2-year-old boy who was hit a by a stray bullet last week and died on Sunday, the child's father, Patrick Ateker, said on Monday.

The clashes started between the government and members of Buganda, one of Uganda's four ancient kingdoms. Members of the Buganda ethnic group have clashed previously with government over land rights.
