The US on Saturday relocated some of the staff of its consulate in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar to the federal capital because of terrorist threats.
The relocation of the staff was a temporary measure undertaken due to terror threats, a spokesman of the US embassy said. The spokesman did not give details of the threats.
Only emergency services would be provided by the US consulate in Peshawar, the spokesman said.
Most foreign consulates and UN agencies had suspended their operations in Peshawar following Tuesday’s suicide car bomb attack on the luxury Pearl Continental hotel that killed 17 people and injured more than 50 others. Three foreigners, including two employees of UN agencies, were among those killed.
Peshawar has witnessed more violence in the wake of the bombing of the hotel, including a gun battle between soldiers and militants who tried to storm the residence of the army’s Corps Commander.
