"A marine from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was shot and killed yesterday evening (Tuesday) after being mistaken for an enemy soldier," Centcom said.

"Emergency personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene, but the marine died on site."

The shooting was under investigation and the name of the marine withheld pending notification of the next of kin. The location of the shooting was not revealed.

Three US soldiers died and three more were injured in accidents around Baghdad on Monday.
