Ravi Singh, a political consultant for many campaigns, argues that the political affiliation of Indian Americans is largely determined by when they came to the US.

If they came on a Democratic president's watch, they would tend towards the Democratic Party and likewise for Republican presidents.

Rao Polavarapu, a software engineer who came to the convention from Indiana, said: "When they come as immigrants, they tend to look to the government for support."

But once they settle down, they begin to realise that if you take some risks and work hard, you can make it. Then they change.

They treasure their wealth, hate paying taxes and hate having it squandered by the government. As would any Republican.
