The popular networking tool was hit by a bug, which allowed people to force others to follow them on the site. Within minutes thousands were using it to force celebrities to follow them.

Twitter was forced to delete all followers from users' accounts to fix the bug and scores of stars from Demi Moore to teen pop sensation Justin Bieber were commenting on the crash, which left them with zero followers.

"I woke up here in LA and Twitter has been hacked. Turns out I am no longer popular," tweeted the 16-year-old heartthrob.

British comedian Stephen Fry too was worried by the dwindling number and wrote, "Do you know, I was sure I had more followers than that. Must've imagined it."

"Ummmmm..... Where did my followers go," wrote US actress Alyssa Milano.

Ashton Kutcher tweeted to suggest the bug was the work of a Turkish hacker.

"Twitter is being hacked by some Turkish hacker," he wrote and a few minutes later, wife Demi Moore added, "The Turkish hacker is really doing a number on twitter!"

As part of the clean up, Twitter has temporarily reset accounts so that people look like they are following no one and have no followers.

"Follower/following numbers are currently at 0; we're aware and this too should shortly be resolved," added the statement.
