The Horns Rev 2 wind farm’s 91 turbines covers an area of some 35 square kilometres and can produce enough electricity to supply 200,000 homes a year, Dong Energy said in a statement.

Denmark’s Crown Prince Frederik took part in the opening ceremony with Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen, the statement added.

Built at a cost of USD 690 million, Horns Rev 2 is the ninth wind farm to set up off the Danish coast since 1991.

It is expected to generate 210 megawatts of electricity each year and is the largest offshore wind farm in terms of capacity and the number of turbines used.

Nearly 20 percent of electricity in Denmark is produced using wind power, according to the Danish government.
