A would-be suicide bomber was shot and killed by members of a pro-government tribal militia when he tried to carry out an attack on the outskirts of Peshawar city in northwest Pakistan on Thursday, police said.

The bomber, a youth in his twenties, tried to attack the head of the lashkar or tribal militia at Badabher when he was gunned down.

The attacker first lobbed a grenade at Dilawar Khan, the chief the lashkar, and then tried to run towards him.

Khan's bodyguards reacted promptly and shot him dead.

Later, a bomb disposal squad removed the would-be bomber’s suicide vest, police officials said.

Khan heads the lashkar at Adezai, an area whose residents have been at the forefront of efforts to counter the Taliban in the region around Peshawar.
