President Asif Ali Zardari Thursday promised US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that his government would take "strong action" against Pakistani elements implicated in the Mumbai attacks.

"The government will not only assist in investigation but also take strong action against any Pakistani elements found involved in the attack," said an official statement issued after their meeting.

"Pakistan is determined to ensure that its territory is not used for any act of terrorism," the President said.

The top US diplomat flew into Islamabad as part of a bid to defuse tensions between India and Pakistan after New Delhi blamed "elements" in Pakistan for last week's attacks in India's commercial hub.

The statement said the regional situation -- particularly in the aftermath of the attacks in Mumbai -- came under discussion.

Pakistan is a key ally in the US-led "war on terror."

Rice, who also met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and senior army officials, told reporters before leaving Islamabad that she found the Pakistani leadership "very focused and committed to act."
