SUVs drive Punjab election race; tractors make a mark

Of the 1,145 people contesting elections in Punjab, just over half declared a vehicle. Only 500 candidates declared cars. Toyota Innovas were the most popular car, with 138 of them on the list. Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu?s Land Cruiser owned the most expensive car. Two candidates have declared a Harley Davidson.Of the 1,332 vehicles declared, nearly 60 were tractors.

What is a name? Quite a lot in Punjab elections

Of the 1,145 candidates contesting the Punjab assembly elections, 92 have the same name as another contestant in their constituency. Kulbir Singh of the Congress is contesting from Zira, a constituency in western Punjab. But he is not the only Kulbir Singh in the fray from that constituency. Three other independents named 'Kulbir Singh' will also be on the ballot.

Is UP cleaning up its act? Number of criminal candidates decreases

The Association for Democratic Reforms reports a drop in the number of candidates with criminal records or cases filed against them. Compared to 2012, when 32% of candidates had criminal cases against them, this time around the figure is 20%: 168 out of 836 aspirants to political office. Of these, 143 have serious criminal cases.The numbers were valid till the third round of polling in the state.

Air pollution worries voters in Uttar Pradesh, but not parties

As many as 46% of urban voters and 26% of rural voters polled before elections began in Uttar Pradesh told a survey the air they breathe is polluted, but that issue isn't on top of the mind of parties. When asked to choose between the three issues of reliable power, clean water and clean air, 40% polled said reliable electricity was most important, 28% cited clean water and 16% said air quality.

Hari Shankar Tiwari, an alleged gangster, was the first person to be elected to a legislature while still in jail in 1985. He subsequently served as a cabinet minister in different governments. His son, Bhishshankar Tiwari, was a Bahujan Samaj Party MP from the Sant Nagar constituency. In state elections now, 168 out of 836 candidates have been named in criminal cases.

In Goa's high voter turnout, a trend and a message

Voter turnout in Goa keeps improving: it was 82.23% this time compared to against 81.73% in 2012. More women turned up at polling booths than men. In around 80% of the state assembly polls whenever voting percentage has been higher than the previous election, there has been a change in the government. Elections in Uttarakhand are always a close shave

Close contests have been the feature of three assembly elections in Uttarakhand since 2000. A total of 19 seats have been won by a margin of less than 2,000 votes and by a margin of less than 5% in the 2012 polls. Of these 19 seats, 16 were won by a margin of less than 3%. And that's not all. Eight of these 16 seats had been won by a vote margin of less than 1%.

The Congress has promised to work for removal of controversial security law AFSPA if voted back to power in Manipur. The law gives security forces sweeping powers in the militancy-affected state and long has been opposed by civil rights groups.

What the fish! Aam Aadmi Party's manifesto promise is a catch

The Aam Aadmi Party in Goa has promised a 'Fish for All' scheme in its 95-point election manifesto. Elvis Gomes, the party's chief ministerial candidate, has promised that his government will provide fresh fish at affordable prices at outlets across the state. The party says it will use fishermen cooperatives and government support for its scheme.
