The DMK on Tuesday formally elected party treasurer and Kolathur MLA MK Stalin as its legislature party leader, allowing him to become the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly.
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam spokesperson Saravanan said that all party cadres “both old and new” were unanimous in their support for Stalin, who had led the party’s campaigns during the 2016 elections, while making the announcement at the party’s headquarters Anna Arivalayam in Chennai.
Senior party leader Duraimurugan was named deputy leader of the opposition, with R Sakkarapani as party whip and Ku Pichand as vice-whip.
The DMK is the single largest opposition in the 234-member House with 89 MLAS, including party leader Karunanidhi. The grand old party of Dravidian politics managed to reverse its fortunes in the previous assembly elections held in 2011, where it only managed to secure 23 seats.
More than 600 members of the party gathered at Anna Arivalayam on Tuesday in the most significant DMK meeting since the results were announced last Thursday.
The first session of the 15th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will begin on Wednesday.
