The removal of the in-house interview with Cyrus Mistry, conducted when he was chairman of Tata Sons, from the website of the group’s holding company was termed an “operational mistake”. The interview was restored on Wednesday evening.
Mystry was ousted as chairman of Tata Sons, and the people who manage the firm’s website were trying to move him from chairman to former chairman and place the interview suitably. “In the process, the interview was deleted. It was an honest operational mistake,” said a group executive who refused to be named.
The interview’s disappearance was being interpreted as a sign that the battle resulting from Mistry’s exit would be an ugly one.
The interview, published in September, was the only one Mistry gave during his nearly four years at the helm, and was conducted by an in-house publication. In over about 5,000 words, Mistry talked about what he was doing with the group.

He said the group’s companies needed “to earn the right to grow”, and that the group leaders will help it earn this right by helping improve operations and possibly restructuring capital. Mistry said the group needed to take another look at its strong hierarchical structure if it were to become more agile, and he wanted to innovate more.
“We are building for the next 150 years,” he said. Now, he is out in less than four, but at least the interview will be back.
