Gabba sees record turnout in Australia vs Pakistan day-night Test

The first two days of the Australia vs Pakistan Test at Brisbane’s Gabba saw attendances of 26,353 and 23,344, with more than 16,500 fans admitted on Saturday before tea

The historic Gabba Day-Night Test has continued to draw strong crowds, with a record attendance confirmed on Saturday for a non-Ashes Test match at the venue.

The opening game of the Australia vs Pakistan Test series had attracted 66,325 fans after the first session, with the two-session ‘twilight’ tickets now applying. In 1975-76, the West Indies and Australia drew 64,383 fans to the “old” Gabba.

The previous high point for a non-Ashes Test at the venue (which was redeveloped progressively from 1995), was 55,947 against Sri Lanka in 2007-08.

The first two days of the Test against Pakistan saw attendances of 26,353 and 23,344, with more than 16,500 fans admitted today before tea.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland was delighted with the outcome.

We have seen fans vote with their feet to embrace the day-night concept in Queensland. We’ve managed to break the non-Ashes attendance record at the venue in just three days, and we’re looking forward to even more fans enjoying this fantastic spectacle.

“Our sincere thanks goes to Queensland Cricket, Tourism & Events Queensland, Stadiums Queensland and Brisbane Marketing for the support in placing the Gabba as a prime international cricket venue,” said Sutherland

Queensland Cricket Chief Executive Officer Max Walters applauded the support shown by fans of the inaugural pink ball Test.

“There has been a wonderful sense of occasion and the atmosphere has been electric, especially when the lights come on and the sun sets,’’ he said.

“Innovations like the Pool Deck and Sandy Point areas have received international coverage and presented the Gabba in a very favourable light.”

“The backing that the event has enjoyed from Cricket Australia, Tourism & Events Queensland and Brisbane Marketing has delivered a first class experience for many fans and we look forward to building on this success for the rest of the season, with the popular BBL just around the corner, and in the seasons to come,’’ said Walters.
