Highlight Story

Hmm. So often, you see a heroine looking like a disaster area. Very unintentionally retro, very uncool. Once in a blue moon, though, a star is given the full-on treatment – outfits, accessories, make-up, hair conditioning and attitude which add up to that super quality called the look.

HT Café focuses on the Miami beach look created for Priyanka Chopra in Dostana. Roshmila Bhattacharya catches the en vogue vibe

Coming out of the ocean, in a gold lame swimsuit for Dostana, you bring back memories of Bo Derek in 10.
(Laughs) Wow, after all these years! But the intention wasn’t to look like Bo Derek or even gorgeous. Since Dostana is shot in Miami, my wardrobe has a beach vibe. I wore a lot of shorts, tank tops and tees. (Laughs) And even then, I felt overdressed. There women go to the supermarket, wearing bikinis. We settled for gold because my skin is dusky and a perfect foil for the colour. We picked up the swimsuit in a store in Miami. It was really small.. itsy-bitsy. So we picked up two and Prasad, the tailor of Manish (designer Manish Malhotra) tailor, sewed them together to make a one-piece, right there on the location.

Will we be seeing you in a bikini too?
No, I was very clear I was not going to wear a two-piece.

Okay, so now John Abraham is revealing more than you in the film but I guess that’s because he can go topless.
(Laughs) John can afford to do that. He has a fantastic body. He’s worked really hard on it. So has Abhishek (Bachchan).

I believe you also cut down on the kilos?
I didn’t lose any weight but yes, I really worked out for Fashion and Dostana because I wanted a toned look. (Laughs) So, even though I had no competition from another girl in Dostana, I would hit the gym with the boys.

What do you think of size zero?
Size zero is unhealthy. If you can get down to it without starving yourself, it’s okay. But I don’t believe in going without food. I eat healthy and then work it off. (Smiles) My parents love me. I’m genetically blessed with a high metabolism. So I don’t have to go in for crash diets. And why should I? Indian women are on the voluptuous side. Our bodies are fuller.. curvy.

The last heroine whose look excited so much curiosity was Kareena Kapoor in Tashan. Did you like her in the film?
I haven’t seen Tashan yet, I was away in Miami shooting for Dostana when the film was released.

What has been the reaction to the Dostana promos?
Overwhelming! It felt as if I had two releases, God Tussi Great Ho and Dostana, even though it’s almost three months away. It’s a different kind of film.. fun with an emotional core. I hope people like it as much as they like the promos.

Dostana was to release with Victory but the Harman Baweja movie has now been pushed ahead to early next year. You must be relieved.
(Laughs) I’d hate to set up a clash with Harman’s film. Vicky Chopra is still shooting Victory which is why the release has been postponed.

You were offered Kaal earlier but it didn’t work out. So what was Dharma Productions like eventually?
Karan (Johar) is a fabulous producer who pampers your every whim. Dharma Productions spoils you.. no other banner treats you the way it does.

The film revolves around two boys who pretend to be gay to get a room and end up being wowed by you. Think you could ever fall for a gay guy?
Maybe, even if I don’t get loved in return. Love knows no barriers.
