Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe: New Monster Universe > Avengers?

The Universal Monster Movie Universe is taking shape.

The makers of the upcoming action-adventure fantasy reboot The Mummy aren’t holding back on the casting. After setting Tom Cruise in the lead role, they’re now pursuing Russell Crowe.

If Crowe joins the project, he will play a Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde-type role, reports

Universal Pictures signed Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan last summer to help develop a monster universe for them with rebooted versions of its classic monster movies.

Kurtzman is also on board to direct, and will produce the film alongside Morgan and Sean Daniel.

The studio’s hope is that Crowe’s small role in The Mummy would lead to a possible stand-alone film for the character, giving Crowe and the studio a new franchise for its monster universe.

Targeting A-list stars, the studio also set Johnny Depp to lead its reboot of The Invisible Man.

The Mummy is set to release in US on June 9, 2017.
