After just 35 % students were declared passed in the intermediate examinations conducted by the Bihar school examination board, on Tuesday, at least three girls committed suicide while a fourth one died of heart attack in various parts of the state.

In addition, a number of other examinees, disappointed with their performance in the examination, attempted suicide.

In Buxar district of south central Bihar, Kiran Kumari, 20, who apparently sunk into depression after being wrongly informed by her friend that she had failed in her intermediate arts examination, committed suicide by jumping in front of a running train, within hours of the declaration of the results.

The body of Kiran, daughter of Kuber Kumar of Kasmariya village under Charpokhri police station of Bhojpur district of south central Bihar, was found on the railway track near Raghunathpur railway station, on the Patna-Mughalsarai section of east central railway zone, around 9.30 pm on Tuesday..

Confirming this, Buxar government railway police (GRP) station house officer (SHO) Ali Akbar Khan said the victim’s father told him he had subsequently corrected the erroneous information by informing the girl she had passed in third division.

“But this information did little to lift her sagging spirits. We suspect that she thought that the original information was correct and that her father was saying she had passed merely to mollify her. This may have led her to kill herself”, the SHO added.

Khan said the Raghunathpur police conveyed the information about the discovery of the body to the Buxar GRP which fetched the body Tuesday night and sent it for autopsy to the Buxar sadar hospital, Wednesday morning, after which it was handed over to her family.

The SHO said that on the basis of statement of father of the victim, a case of unnatural death was being registered. No information was available about the institution from which the victim appeared for her intermediate examination, he said.

Another examinee, Aarti Kumari, committed suicide by hanging herself at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur district of south eastern Bihar, soon after she learnt that she had failed in the intermediate science examination.

"Originally from Shahebganj in Jharkhand, Aarti was staying at her maternal uncle's home for the last few years to pursue education”, said a police officer..

Khusboo Kumari, a student of SSV College, Bhagalpur, also committed suicide by hanging herself, said the police.

A report from Labedahan village in Kaimur district of western Bihar, said a girl, Rukhsana, daughter of Ramzan Ansari, died of a heart attack caused by the shock of failing in one of the intermediate examination subjects. She was a student of Navbharat High School, Deohalia.

In Sheikhpura district of south eastern Bihar, a girl attempted suicide after she failed in the Class 12 science exam, but a member of her immediate family came to her rescue. "She has confessed that she tried to end her life after she failed in the examination," a district police official said.

Reports from suicide attempts by failed intermediate examinees came in from several other districts but could not be confirmed.
