The Maoists allegedly mutilated bodies of slain CRPF personnel with sharp weapons during the attack on the security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Monday, according to information trickling in a day after the incident.

Yes there are indications that the bodies were mutilated. But it can be confirmed only after receiving the post-mortem report,” Dantewada DIG DP Updhayay told HT.

Some of the members of the rescued team, who rushed to the spot after the incident, admitted seeing mutilated bodies on the spot.

The guerrillas even chopped off private parts of some of the victims.

“I have seen the mutilated bodies... They even dismembered private parts of some of the slain soldiers, displaying extreme cruelty,” said a senior COBRA official who was amongst the first to reach the spot.

As many as 25 CRPF personnel were killed when the rebels ambushed a road opening party (ROP) of the paramilitary force.

The encounter lasted for more than three hours at a jungle area in Burkapal near Chintagufa, just a kilometer away from a CRPF camp.

The sources in the force said the Maoists were using villagers as human shields, making it difficult for the trapped soldiers to retaliate effectively.

“They were in black and olive green fatigues and even in civvies. So it became very difficult to pinpoint them...... They took advantage of this to break our defense,” said another officer.

Senior police officials involved in the investigation said the modus operandi of the attack was similar to the ambush carried out by the rebels on a team of security forces guarding Injiram-Bhejji road at Bhejji village on March 11, killing 13.

“At both the places , the ROP came under the attack and since the distance between Burkapal and Bhejji as the crow flies is only 20 km, the same Maoist team could be behind the attack,” IG Bastar range Vivekanand told HT.

Police have started grilling some Burkapal villagers to gather more details about the attack and Maoist cadres involved in it.

“We were inside our house when the encounter started. We heard sounds of bullet shots. After the firing stopped, when we came out of the house, security personnel were everywhere,” said Gogi Bai, a resident of the village.

Chintagufa area where the encounter took place is known as “Maoists’ capital”.

The Dornapal-Jagdargonda road that the ROP was guarding passes through this Maoist stronghold and as such the ultras are against the road construction.

In all 15 companies of CRPF are deployed in this area in 11 camps to guard the 56-km under construction road.

Since 2014, 11 encounters have taken place on this stretch of the road.

“Monday’s was the biggest attack carried out by the Maoists on a road opening party in the area,” said a police officer.

The IG Bastar said the Maoists carried out the attack out of frustrations as it has suffered many reveres in the state in the recent past.

Incidents of Maoist attack in the state have come down, he added.
