After evading the city police for over a month, actor Meera Chopra, 30, was interrogated for five hours at DLF City police station in connection with Ruchi Bhuttan death case.

Meera is a relative of Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra. Meera, against whom the police had issued an arrest warrant, came with her family and lawyer, who carried an interim stay order against her arrest passed by the Punjab and Haryana high court. The police can't take her into custody till August 24.

Police sources say, Meera claimed that she has not been in touch with Sumit Bhuttan, Ruchi's husband, since 2004.

Meera claimed she spoke with him only on June 29, a week before Ruchi's suicide. She said she was discussing an FIR with Sumit, which she had filed with the Saket police station against a stalker in Delhi in June.

"I got my statement recorded with DLF City police, and I will come again to help the investigators," said Meera.

She alleged she was being made a scapegoat so that the prosecution will have something to show as having achieved something in the case.

"We were friends for a while in 2004. There was also a marriage proposal, which didn't work out, and we got out of touch. On June 29 I saw a missed call from Sumit and I returned the call, just to talk to him about the stalker case. I am being dragged into the controversy for no reason," she said.

Ruchi's parents, however, claimed that Meera and Sumit are in a relationship. Ruchi's sister Shefali Gupta alleged that Ruchi was tortured and then murdered for dowry, and she was also forced to accept Sumit's extramarital affair.

"Before Ruchi got married, Meera visited Sumit's office and slapped my daughter for coming between her and Sumit. Even after the wedding Meera used to call Ruchi and harass her. Meera's other mobile has call records of her relationship with Sumit. It should be traced and verified," alleged Gupta.

Meera's lawyer Harish Malhotra said the police opposed her bail plea in court.

"My client is cooperating with the investigators and she will appear again, if need be. We will move court for a regular bail on August 24, when the interim stay on her arrest lapses," said Malhotra.

Gurgaon police had filed an FIR on July 5 against Sumit Bhuttan and had named Meera, too.

Ruchi's parents say she committed suicide because of Sumit's extramarital relationship with Meera. Sumit, runs a share brokerage firm in Delhi, and is presently in Gurgaon jail.
