Leaders of various khap panchayats in Uttar Pradesh have decided to block traffic on the Meerut-Karnal highway on Saturday to demand reservations for Jats in government jobs.
At a meeting held in Shamli on Friday, khap leaders decided to strengthen their ongoing protest to demand quotas and urged members of the community to present a united front.
Representative of the Gathwala khap Ch Rajendra Singh said a symbolic protest would be launched from Titauli village in Shamli district on Saturday, where Jats would block traffic on the Meerut-Karnal highway.
“We are prepared to fight for our rights and ensure reservation for the Jat community,” said Nirwal khap’s Choudhary Rajveer Singh Mundate.
Anil Malik, national general secretary of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Bhanu Group), said the movement’s future course would be decided after Saturday’s protest.
