Police arrested on Tuesday two people employed at the sprawling Pune campus of software major Infosys for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman who worked in a canteen inside the premises.
The accused -- Paritosh Lala Baug (21) and Prakash Kisan Mahadik (30) – were employed by a contractor at the canteen in Phase I of the 114-acre campus and raped the female worker inside the lavatory on Sunday evening when she had gone to freshen up, police said.
“While she went inside, the accused followed her and rape her,” said inspector Vishwajit Khule.
They allegedly clicked pictures of the woman on their mobile phones and threatened to circulate the images on the internet if she approached the police, and also make her reported love affair public
Scared by the threats, the woman initially approached female security guards at the Infosys facility in the Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology park, Hinjewadi, and lodged a complaint a day later. Immediately afterwards, they were arrested by the police and remanded to judicial custody till January 1 by a local court.
In a statement, Infosys said the incident involved contractual staff of one of its partners.
“We are investigating the matter and are working closely with the police to aid their investigation,” the statement said. The company also said it has a “zero tolerance” policy against sexual harassment which extends to contractual staff as well, and that all the campuses have stringent security measures in place.
