The issue of safety of women politicians has snowballed into a much larger concern within a fortnight with three women leaders from Maharashtra across political parties receiving threats and lewd remarks from unknown people.

On Monday, Congress legislator Varsha Gaikwad lodged a complaint with the Wadala police for getting obscene messages on her mobile phone from an unidentified number. Last week, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Shaina NC and Shiv Sena Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Neelam Gorhe also registered similar complaints. While Shaina NC complained of getting lewd text messages, Gorhe said she got threats of rape and murder over the phone.
Gaikwad told the media, “I received these messages during the elections. These kind of incidents don’t suit what we call a progressive Maharashtra. This is a grave question of law and order.” The MLA plans to raise the issue in the state legislative assembly.
In case of Shaina NC’s complaint, the police on Sunday identified a BJP worker from Varanasi, Jayantkumar Singh, as the accused.
