Chandigarh is the cleanest city in North India and Muktsar in Punjab the dirtiest, according to the Swachh Survekshan-2017, announced by the government in New Delhi on Thursday.

North Indian cities continued to fare poorly on all sanitation parameters. Two of the bottom 10 cities are from Punjab. Cities in the South and West fared better than those in the North.

The survey results announced by Union urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu said while Indore is the cleanest city in India, Chandigarh the country’s best planned city, is 11th in the cleanliness ranking of 434 cities.

Muktsar, the holy Sikh town and home turf of two former Punjab chief ministers, is the seventh dirtiest town in the country, the survey says.

Here’s a state-wise breakup of the cleanest and dirtiest cities of the northern region.
