The centre had been non-functional for quite some time due to non-availability of a psychiatrist.

Expressing her displeasure over the progress of work relating to renovation of the hospital, Mahajan said that she had asked the engineering wing to allot work to some other contractor if the present contractor was not interested in carrying on the work. She denied there was a shortage of specialist doctors in the hospital. She said a radiologist would also be posted soon.

She expressed satisfaction over the functioning of the newly set up mother-child hospital, adding that its functioning would be further improved in the coming days by posting trained nurses in the hospital.

Responding to a query about posting of two civil surgeons at Rupnagar, she said that since civil surgeon Dr Balwinder Singh was unwell, the Punjab and Haryana high court had ordered to keep him at Rupnagar and post another doctor as civil surgeon to ensure proper functioning of the department. So, Dr Harminder Kaur Sodhi has also been appointed civil surgeon, she said.

Earlier, she also took a round of the hospital and saw the functioning of OPDs, the dialysis unit and the emergency ward.
