A former US marine’s Facebook post with an inspiring message has gone viral after he was killed by a drunk driver on New Year’s Eve.

“I really don’t know where I’ll end up tonight but I do know where I wind up is where I’m meant to be,” Matthew DeRemer posted on his Facebook wall at 10am on December 31.

A photo of a quote, which the 31-year-old Iraq veteran, tagged in the post read, “We are born in 1 day, we die in 1 day, we can change in 1 day. And we can fall in love in 1 day. Anything can happen in just 1 day.”

Hours later, at around 8pm, DeRemer was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle in Largo, Florida. Steven Lee Clarke, who was driving the car under the influence of alcohol, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence-manslaughter, according to local newspaper TampaBay Times.

Here is DeRemer’s last Facebook post.

Friends and strangers flocked on his timeline to write messages of condolence and said they were “inspired” by his post. His last post went viral after his death garnering more than 20,000 shares and 55,000 likes at the time this article was published.

“Matt, you were an inspiration to so many with you final Facebook postings,” Florida’s Virginia Thomsen wrote.

“Even from heaven You continue inspiring people Matthew,” Andrea Arias, a Florida resident, said.

“What a beautiful spirit Matthew had. He was taken home too soon. I believe God needs him for another special assignment,” another Florida resident Beth Schwab posted.
