A rare confluence of art, films, theatre and food is here to entertain Delhiites. With the focus on ‘imagination’, The Abhyas Art Initiative (an affiliate of the Abhyas Trust) brings forth the Marvelous Reality Festival which celebrates Magic Realism. The festival that comprises film screenings, theatrical performances, art exhibitions and food inspired from the text of literature, urges onlookers to return to the world of wonder.
“The festival aims to bring back the sense of security among our folks — to make art free from all boundaries and maintain the essence of magic in all the art forms,” says curator Sunil Mehra. The festival kicks off with an art exhibition on December 9 at the Lalit Kala Academy. The exhibition in its gamut includes video art, drawings, paintings, photography, site-specific installations and sculptures by 37 artists from across the world.
The opening day will also witness the screening of the film, Spider’s Strategem at the Italian Cultural Centre. The various other films based on the theme of magic
realism, will be screened at different venues like Max Mueller Bhavan, British Council, Italian Cultural Centre and Cervantes Institute. All the films have been
aesthetically selected by film historian and Cannes Film Festival jurist, Aruna Vasudev.
Next in line will be a food fiesta that presents food which has its base in the text from several authors of international repute who write in this genre. This section plans to evoke memories of immortal writings on food and bringing forth the magical delicacies will be celebrated chef Ritu Dalmia. The festival ends with Neelam Mansingh’s theatrical presentation, The Suit, a play that deals with moral dilemma faced by a young married couple and reveals that how within the ostensibly secure walls of marriage, violence is exercised.
